Leave the past alone....I don't want to go there
Many people who come for therapy specifically ask that we don't 'dredge up' the past. They want healing now in the present to set up changes for a more positive future. That is a great attitude to have but there is a but.....we are all the sum of all of our experiences and very often therapy will be focussed on a repeating pattern of behaviour or deep seated habits that no matter what, the person is unable to change.
Sometimes the past will need to be unpacked and examined in light of current problems before the person can move on. Within the safe haven of therapy and under the guidance of an experienced counsellor this can be an enlightening and life changing experience. Memories that were once thought to be painful can be seen in a new light of learning and understanding of how even the toughest periods have contributed to make us the unique individuals we are today. This re-examination can also unlock the 'why' we experience certain difficulties and help us make a different choice as we move forward.
