The James Dean Effect

Somewhat of a common theme with all the people I help become non-smokers is one of the main reasons that they started in the first place - wanting to rebel or feeling they wanted to be one of the cool kids. It made me think of James Dean - the ultimate rebel and cool kid. Famously his was a life lived in the fast lane until it tragically ended so early in a car crash. But what if he had lived? Would he have kicked the smoking habit or today would we have a faded icon ravaged by a lifestyle of hedonism?

I think we should all embrace the rebel inside and give it reign in productive, positive ways rather than destructive, self defeating behaviours. Rebel today against the tyranny of your routine and just for 20 minutes do something you really want to do. Get some fresh air, kick a football, wash your hair, buy a new perfume or aftershave, leave the washing up until later, strike up a conversation with a stranger, go on the swings on the park (whatever your age).... you make your own list and enjoy the freedom that ultimately is within your control.
