New Year's Resolutions...Trek Ethiopia

Every year we make resolutions to get fit, lose weight, give up our vices (or take up some new ones?)....I made my 2009 resolution in August 2008 and there is no going back! On Saturday 28th February I fly to Addis Ababa, Capital of Ethiopia, to spend 6 days trekking in the Simien Mountains.

My resolutions for the past 10 years have all been to get fitter and lose weight but this year these are the secondary means to a greater end. This walking challenge has forced me into training since August. In all weathers I've been walking and running. I'm no fan of the gym but I've made it two or three times most weeks. My focus has not been the losing of lbs but the constant push that if I do not complete the walk and raise the money I am letting down people who are deserving of a break.

Trek Ethiopia is a Computeraid Challenge and the money that each of us raises finances a computer equipped classroom for a school and the wider community in a village in Africa. When I first read of this challenge I was reminded of the parable, 'If you want to feed a man for a day you give him a fish, if you want to feed a man (and his family/community)for life you give him the equipment and teach him how to fish'. I believe that a generation of computer literate well-educated children growing up in Africa will help immeasurably to improve long term prospects.

Computeraid is also a green charity who look to find ways to recycle and reuse computer equipment and peripherals for good causes around the world. To date I have raised £1500 but need a final push to reach my total of £2700. Any donations would be welcome via www.justgiving.com/rachelarnold2 and don't forget to gift aid the donation so the charity can get extra funds from the taxman!

I will be publishing regular updates so follow my progress in the last few weeks of training and then as I complete the actual challenge.
